Video Descriptions: This series of video demonstrations on periodontal typodonts is designed to teach the fundamentals of periodontal instrumentation.
Unit 1 β Assessment Instruments
1. Preparation for Periodontal Instrumentation Practice
This introductory video explains proper glove fit, selecting a typodont, basic operator positioning and the parts of an instrument.
2. Periodontal Probe
a. Introduction to the Periodontal Probe
A basic demonstration of use of the periodontal probe on a mandibular molar area and the mandibular anterior area. Grasp, intraoral fulcrum and strokes are demonstrated.
b. Probing the Mandibular Arch
A detailed demonstration of positions, grasp, mirror fulcrums and probing fulcrums and technique for the facial and lingual aspects of all three mandibular sextants.
c. Probing the Maxillary Arch
A detailed demonstration of positions, grasp, mirror fulcrums and probing fulcrums and technique for the facial and lingual aspects of all three maxillary sextants.
3. Furcation Probes
A detailed demonstration of the use of the Nabors #1 and Nabors #2 furcation probes for detection and classification of furcations.
4. Testing for mobility
A demonstration of mobility testing of the mandibular anterior and posterior teeth with an explanation of Class 1,2 and 3 mobility.
5. ODU 11/12 Explorer
a. Introduction to the ODU 11/12 Explorer
A basic demonstration of use of the ODU 11/12 explorer on a mandibular molar area and the mandibular anterior area. Grasp, finding the right end, intraoral fulcrum and strokes are demonstrated.
b. Exploring the Mandibular Arch with the ODU 11/12 Explorer
A detailed demonstration of position, grasp, mirror fulcrums and ODU 11/12 exploring fulcrums and technique for the facial and lingual aspects of all three mandibular sextants.
c. Exploring the Maxillary Arch with the ODU 11/12 Explorer
A detailed demonstration of position, grasp, mirror fulcrums and ODU 11/12 exploring fulcrums and technique for the facial and lingual aspects of all three maxillary sextants.
6. 3A Explorer
a. Introduction to the 3A Explorer
A basic demonstration of use of the 3A explorer on a mandibular molar area and the mandibular anterior area . Grasp, intraoral fulcrum and strokes are demonstrated.
b. Exploring the Mandibular Arch with the 3A Explorer
A detailed demonstration of position, grasp, mirror fulcrums and 3A exploring fulcrums and technique for the facial and lingual aspects of all three mandibular sextants.
c. Exploring the Maxillary Arch with the 3A Explorer
A detailed demonstration of position, grasp, mirror fulcrums and 3A exploring fulcrums and technique for the facial and lingual aspects of all three maxillary sextants.
Unit 2 β Scaling Instruments
1. Preparation for Periodontal Instrumentation Practice
This introductory video explains proper glove fit, selecting a typodont, basic operator positioning and the parts of an instrument.
2. Comparison of Hand Instrument and Ultrasonic Scaling Strokes
Close-up demonstration on extracted teeth of the similarities and differences among strokes with various hand Instruments and ultrasonic scaler tips.
3. Sickle Scalers
a. Introduction to the Anterior and Posterior Sickle Scalers
A basic demonstration of the use of an anterior sickle scaler on the mandibular anterior area and a posterior sickle scaler on a mandibular molar area. Grasp, intraoral fulcrum and strokes are demonstrated.
b. Use of the Anterior Sickle Scalers on the Mandibular and Maxillary Anterior Teeth
A detailed demonstration of position, grasp, mirror fulcrums and anterior sickle scaler fulcrums and technique for the facial and lingual aspects of the mandibular and maxillary sextants.
c. Use of the Posterior Sickle Scalers on the Mandibular Arch
A detailed demonstration of position, grasp, mirror fulcrums and posterior sickle scaler fulcrums and technique for the facial and lingual aspects of all three mandibular sextants.
